FRANKFURT, Germany — Only two Filipinos remain undergoing medical treatment in Bavarian hospitals as 29 others have been discharged following a fatal tour bus accident on the A96 motorway in southern Germany. The bus, carrying 33 Filipino tourists, overturned while travelling from Milan, Italy, to Munich for the annual Oktoberfest beer festival.
The Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt confirmed in its latest update that the most recently discharged patient was cleared for travel and has safely returned to Milan.
The tragic crash claimed the lives of two passengers, identified as a 58-year-old Filipino man and a 27-year-old Filipina based in Italy. Initial emergency response reports indicated that eight passengers suffered severe injuries, with six airlifted by rescue helicopters and two transported by land ambulances, while others received treatment at a temporary field medical station before being transferred to regional hospitals.
Over the course of four days, hospital discharges progressed steadily. An initial update reported 27 passengers discharged and four remaining under hospital care. A subsequent update showed 28 patients released and three remaining in medical care, before reaching the current figure of 29 discharged passengers and two remaining in hospital care.
The incident occurred shortly before 6:00 AM on Sunday, 27 September 2026, along the A96 motorway between Buchloe-Ost and Landsberg am Lech-West. According to findings from German traffic police and the prosecutor's office, the Italian-registered coach veered off the right side of the motorway, rolled down an embankment, and came to rest on its side. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The two Italian bus drivers sustained no injuries. As part of standard legal procedure, German authorities are investigating the driver who was behind the wheel for potential negligent homicide. An accident reconstruction expert was appointed by the prosecutor's office to examine the site and determine the precise cause of the crash.
A joint response team on the ground in Bavaria continues to coordinate medical, logistical, and legal assistance for the victims and their families. The delegation includes Consul General Marie Yvette Banzon Abalos of the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, Department of Migrant Workers Undersecretary Jainal Rasul, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator PY Caunan, and Philippine Honorary Consul Dr. Stefan Detig.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the Migrant Workers Office in Milan provided ground transportation, meals, and diplomatic escorts to return discharged tourists safely to Italy. Formal proceedings to repatriate the remains of the two deceased individuals are currently underway.
Philippine officials have also facilitated consultations with German legal counsel to secure representation for the affected passengers and their families. Undersecretary Rasul met directly with German police officials to emphasise the importance of a thorough investigation to establish liability for potential future legal claims.
The Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt expressed formal gratitude to German local officials and first responders, including District Administrator Daniela Groß, the Traffic and Highway Patrol Group in Fürstenfeldbruck, the Landsberg and Buchloe police and fire departments, the Red Cross, Malteser, the Medevac unit, and the medical staff at the University of Regensburg Hospital.
