3 Filipino Seafarers attacked in UK, 1 remains critical

BRISTOL, England — Three Filipino seafarers were assaulted while on shore leave in Bristol, England leaving one in critical condition in intensive care and prompting an ongoing investigation by British authorities, Philippine officials said on August 13, 2026.
The three were crew members of the general-cargo vessel MV Arklow Beacon, which was docked at Avonmouth, part of the Port of Bristol, when the incident occurred.
Port records show the vessel arrived at Avonmouth early on July 31, 2026.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said two of the seafarers, who suffered minor injuries, have returned to the Philippines.
The third is still confined at a hospital in the United Kingdom.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the Philippine government is closely monitoring the case and coordinating with British authorities.
“On July 31, unfortunately, we had three crew members whose ship was docked in Bristol, England, and they encountered some people there who severely assaulted them,” he told the Philippine News Agency.
Cacdac said several suspects have already been arrested.
What happened?
Cacdac stressed that going ashore is routine for seafarers when their ships arrive at port.
“Normal yan na dumaong muna ang barko at mag-onshore leave muna o mag-disembark muna ang ating mga kababayan (It's normal for the ship to dock first and for our countrymen to take on-shore leave or disembark first),” he said.
The seafarers subsequently encountered people in a community near the port and were physically assaulted, according to the DMW.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
Cacdac stated that authorities have yet to determine the reason why the Filipinos were attacked.
Speaking in Filipino, Cacdac cautioned against drawing conclusions about the motive.
“Hintayin lang natin ang resulta ng imbestigasyon. Maraming mga haka-haka at ispekulasyon.” (“Let’s just wait for the results of the investigation. There are many rumors and speculations”).
Two seafarers safely home
The two Filipino crew members who sustained minor injuries returned to the Philippines on August 9, 2026.
The DMW said the returning seafarers received government assistance, including:
financial assistance;
physical and psychological assessment;
debriefing; and
other welfare support.
The response reflects the additional risks faced by Filipino seafarers who can become vulnerable not only while at sea but also during shore leave in foreign ports.
Update on Filipino seafarer in critical condition
Cacdac said the Philippine government is assisting the victim’s family so they can travel to Bristol. His daughter has already arrived in England, while arrangements were being made for his wife to join her.
The Philippine Embassy in London, led by Ambassador Teodoro Locsin Jr., and DMW labor attaches are monitoring the patient's condition and coordinating with British authorities.
