VIENNA- Austria’s Johannes Pietsch, known by his stage name JJ, clinched victory at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest held last night, with his innovative pop-opera anthem “Wasted Love.”

The 23-year-old countertenor captivated audiences with a performance that seamlessly blended classical opera with modern techno-pop elements. His four-octave vocal range and emotive delivery earned top marks from both juries and viewers across Europe.

Born in Vienna to an Austrian father and a Filipina mother, Pietsch spent much of his childhood in Dubai before returning to Austria in 2016. Fluent in German, English, Tagalog, and French, he brings a multicultural flair to his artistry. He currently studies solo voice at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna and performs at the Vienna State Opera.

“Wasted Love,” co-written with Teodora Špirić (Teya) and Thomas Thurner, begins as a delicate ballad and crescendos into a dramatic, techno-infused finale. The song explores the anguish of unrequited love, showcasing Pietsch’s vocal prowess.

This win marks Austria’s third Eurovision triumph, following victories in 1966 and 2014. Pietsch’s success underscores the contest’s celebration of musical diversity and innovation.

In his acceptance speech, JJ expressed gratitude to his supporters and emphasized the unifying power of music. “This moment is a testament to the beauty of blending cultures and genres,” he said.

With “Wasted Love,” Johannes Pietsch has not only secured a place in Eurovision history but also highlighted the evolving landscape of contemporary music.
