Christchurch, New Zealand — Full-blooded Caviteño Gregorio “Gary” Umali has wowed art aficionados in New Zealand with his recent first solo art exhibition dubbed as “Harmony and Hue: An Immersive Celebration of Nature’s Vibrant Rhythm Art”.

Discovering his passion for arts and creative skills at a tender age of three when he used to draw random objects with great precision, Umali believes he owes his successful artistic journey to his family who has been his source of inspiration and who serves as his rock and fortress.

“My Nanay (mother) told me that before I even to go kindergarten I can actually draw great subjects. I get my inspiration from my family who supports and inspires me. They are my No.1 fan,” says 49-year old award-winning artist.

Umali, who is a full-time aircraft engineer by profession and a recreational pilot, migrated to Christchurch, New Zealand from Poblacion Barangay Dos in Indang, Cavite, almost two decades ago.

His profession has allowed him to explore the breadth of New Zealand’s beauty, influencing and driving his passion for painting and culminating in visually striking pieces that reflect the natural world.

Aside from showcasing the beauties of New Zealand and the Philippines’ magical green landscape through his exceptional talent, Umali deems art as an avenue to display Filipinos’ great attitude and character.

“I feel very proud to be a Filipino. For all my fellow kababayans here in New Zealand and anywhere around the world, just remember to share our God-given talents and show them our interest in making this world a better place,” the self-taught artist opines.

Umali’s art exhibition born from unlikely fusion of art and aviation will run for three months from May 31 till August 31, 2025 at Fo Guan Yuan Art Gallery. It has so far been attended by 300 art enthusiasts and several paintings were already sold.
