VIENNA— Austria’s newly crowned Eurovision champion, Austro-Filipino JJ Pietsch or Johannes Pietsch, returned to Vienna on Sunday to a hero’s welcome, sparking a media blitz and nonstop coverage on ORF. The 24-year-old countertenor, fresh off his dramatic victory in Basel with the operatic-techno anthem “Wasted Love,” was greeted at Vienna International Airport by hundreds of fans waving flags, blasting his winning track, and showering him with hugs and roses.

Clutching his Eurovision trophy, JJ, who also performs at the Vienna State Opera, thanked the crowd for their heartfelt welcome. His emotional arrival was followed by a press conference at ORF headquarters, where he spoke to national and international media about his song’s powerful message of resilience and unity.

ORF aired wall-to-wall coverage of his return, including live footage from the airport and the press event, bookended by a retrospective on Austria’s Eurovision legacy. The programming spotlighted JJ’s rare fusion of classical training and mainstream appeal—a combination that helped secure Austria’s third Eurovision victory.

President Alexander Van der Bellen praised the win on social media: “What a success! What a voice! What a show! All of Austria is happy.” Chancellor Christian Stoecker echoed the sentiment, calling JJ’s performance a “great success” and a milestone moment for Austrian music.

As cities across Austria now compete to host Eurovision 2026, JJ expressed hope that Vienna would be chosen—and shared his dream of co-hosting the event alongside his mentor, Conchita Wurst.

For now, JJ Pietsch’s triumphant return has united the country in celebration, with ORF’s in-depth coverage capturing the pride of a nation.
