LONDON, England — He didn’t take home the official crown, but Filipino singing sensation Matty Juniosa, affectionately known as Matty J, has undoubtedly won the hearts of millions across the globe.
During Saturday’s highly anticipated Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) Season 19 finale, global fans tuned in with high hopes that the Filipino powerhouse would clinch the grand prize. Matty J delivered a spine-tingling, emotional rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" that left the judges in awe once again.
Judge Amanda Holden hailed the performance as "absolute perfection," while head judge Simon Cowell confessed that the judges had been "in love" with Matty since the very beginning of the competition.
Despite earning a rare two Golden Buzzers and pulling in the highest audition views of Season 19, Matty J’s fate ultimately rested in the hands of the British voting public.
When the final votes were tallied, Matty J narrowly missed the podium, finishing in fourth place. The grand winner and the £250,000 (over ₱20 million) cash prize—went to The Hawkstone Farmer’s Choir.
The result sparked immediate heartbreak and controversy online. Social media was flooded with reactions from disappointed fans, with many passionately claiming that the Filipino singer was "robbed" of the trophy.
'Years of Sacrifice'
Reflecting on his historic run, Matty J remains deeply grounded and incredibly grateful, viewing his BGT journey as a massive victory in itself.
"It’s actually surreal to me... I don’t think it has sunken in," Matty J shared in an interview with ABS-CBN News.
"I know the hard work I pulled to be here. These things don’t come to a lot of people. These things don’t happen overnight. It was years and years of hard work and labour and sacrifice."
Next Stop: The West End
While his BGT chapter has closed, a massive new door is already opening. Matty J revealed that the competition has completely transformed his life, as he has officially joined the cast of the iconic musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which is set to debut in London’s prestigious West End on June 20.
For Matty, this newfound platform is an opportunity to pave the way for others.
"With every good thing in life, pay it forward, and I always lived by that," he said. "This isn’t just me now. There are many people who can be inspired to join, to get into this career."
Amid global conflicts and challenging times back home in the Philippines, Matty J is proud to have brought a beacon of joy and inspiration to his kababayans.
Sending a message of love to his supporters, he said: "Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat (Thank you all so very much). I'm so grateful to have all your support throughout this competition and we have more cooking up along the way... let’s enjoy it altogether."
