Ajax Match Suspended After Pyrotechnic Attack Forces Halt In Amsterdam
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands—The Dutch Eredivisie match between Ajax and FC Groningen at the Johan Cruijff Arena was abruptly suspended barely five minutes after kick-off today, following a severe pyrotechnic display launched by a section of home supporters.
The game, which began at 20:00 local time, was brought to a standstill after a barrage of fireworks was thrown onto the pitch and into surrounding seating areas, prompting the referee to halt play immediately and order both teams back to the dressing rooms.
The Incident
Reports indicate that the pyrotechnics, which are strictly prohibited inside the stadium, were smuggled in by members of the club’s hardcore fan base. According to eyewitness accounts, the devices were concealed inside large drums commonly used by supporters' groups, bypassing regular security checks at the gates.
The disruption occurred during the early stages of the contest, creating thick smoke and raising serious safety concerns for players and spectators alike. Stewards and security personnel moved quickly to identify the section responsible, but the damage had already been done, forcing the indefinite suspension of the match.
Safety Concerns and Investigation
The use of pyrotechnics, including flares and fireworks, has long been a major issue for European football authorities due to the risk of burns and panic in crowded areas. This incident is expected to trigger a major safety review by both Ajax Football Club and the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).
The police have confirmed they are investigating the incident, focusing on footage and witness statements to identify those responsible for carrying and igniting the illegal devices. The KNVB regulations dictate severe penalties for such disruptions, which can include heavy fines for the club, stadium bans for the perpetrators, and potentially forcing the remainder of the match to be played behind closed doors at a later date.
A decision on whether the fixture will resume later this evening or be postponed entirely is awaiting confirmation from league officials, pending a full assessment of the safety situation and the extent of the damage caused by the devices.
