WASHINGTON, D.C. — Filipina tennis star Alex Eala secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open on 29 July 2026, dethroning defending champion and seventh seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

The match at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. lasted one hour and 53 minutes. Eala took control early, breaking Fernandez twice to comfortably take the opening set 6-2.

The second set presented a far tougher test as Fernandez mounted a surge, taking a commanding 5-1 lead. Staving off the set deficit, Eala produced a remarkable comeback by winning five of the next six games to force a tiebreak. She then dominated the tiebreak 7-1 to close out the match.

The victory levels the head-to-head series between the two players at 1-1, following Fernandez's victory over Eala at the Stuttgart Open earlier in April 2026. Reflecting on her second-set turnaround, Eala noted that patience and mental composure were crucial in working through the slump when her level temporarily dropped.
