STUTTGART, Germany — Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez overcame crowd favorite Filipina Alex Eala, 6–1, 6–4, in Round of 32 Porsche Tennis Gran Prix Singles Match, but the loud support for the Filipina star never wavered.

Filipinos who came to watch Eala in Stuttgart, Germany brought energy, pride, and heartfelt support to the stands.

One placard capturing their message clearly: “Matalo man o manalo.” Win or lose, they stood by her.

Fernandez, however, was more composed in the crucial moments, using her consistency and control to frustrate Eala in their lefty-versus-lefty clash.

Though Eala fell in straight sets, she continued to show grit, talent, and the promise that has made her one of the most exciting young names in tennis.

Even in defeat, Eala remained the people’s favorite — and for the Filipinos in Stuttgart, their belief in her future was just as strong as ever.

Philippine Consul General in Frankfurt Ivy Banzon, who cheered for Eala with the Filipino community at the center court, has expressed also her support to the 20-year-old Filipina.

“So proud of Alex Eala. Your strength, grace, and unwavering spirit continue to inspire us all. Every match is part of your journey—and your story is only getting brighter. The Filipino community stands with you, always. Onward and upward,” Banzon said on Facebook.
