American Actor/Singer Rex Smith to Perform At PGMG’s Gala Night

CERRITOS, California – Former American teen idol, actor and singer Rex Smith will banner a diverse array of entertainers during the Induction Ball, Gala Night and Anniversary celebration of the Philippine Global Media Group (PGMG) on Aug. 8 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel in this city.

Smith, who made his acting debut in the Broadway musical “Grease” in 1978 as Jesse Mach in the 1985 television series “Street Hawk,” was the first actor to play the Marvel Comics superhero Daredevil and with a gold top 10 single, “You Take My Breath Away” in 1979, is expected to enliven this milestone media event.

Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz will be the inducting officer and keynote speaker while host City of Cerritos Mayor Lynda P. Johnson and Mayor Pro-Temp Mark Pulido will deliver inspirational remarks. Elected public officials in the metro Los Angeles region have also been invited as guests of honors.

The officers to be sworn in are: PGMG President Dan E. Niño, Board Chair Val G. Abelgas; vice presidents Lydia V. Solis, Nimfa U. Rueda, Jannelle So-Perkins, Donnabelle Gatdula-Arevalo (secretary), Meg Ilagan (treasurer), Rick Gavino (auditor) Ellen Rodriguez-Swing and Joe T. Cobilla, Jr. (public relations officers), along with board members Marc Pijuan, Louinn Lota, Alfred G. Gabot, Meh M. Guevarra, Bobby Crisostomo, Julian Oriel, Vics Magsaysay, Joy Mariño, Doeleth Gatdula, Nemen Cabatuando, Benny Uy, Isidric M. Panganiban, Mylene K. Capati, Fernandico Gonong, Jr., Eddie C. Ferrer, and Mel T. Velasco.


In describing PGMG's mission and vision, Nino said “As journalists, we can shape public opinion for the betterment of our community in both our adoptive country and in the homeland. We can communicate our observations about the global Filipino diaspora. We are here to listen, inspire, illuminate, to enlighten, to empower and engage productively.”

A portion of the event’s proceeds will be earmarked for the Manny Ilagan Memorial Scholarship Program. Founding Board Chairman Ilagan, a former regional director of the Department of Tourism in Los Angeles, was a regular travel writer for the Philippine Post before he passed away in late 2024.

The Cerritos-based PGMG is a public benefit, 501 C-3 nonprofit organization dedicated in civic engagement to serve the various publics inform its readers of current eventsP in the homeland and in the flourishing Filipino-American community in the United States.

Founded in October 2023, PGMG serves as an entity to unite the various practitioners in print, broadcast and digital media with the mission of uplifting the journalistic and ethical standards initially among media men and women in Southern California, with an eye to expanding the group to include media practitioners in the global Filipino diaspora, and thereby be of better service to the information needs of overseas Filipinos in their respective communities. Aside from the US, the group also has members in Manila and Europe.
