MILAN, Italy — Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who built a global empire on understated elegance, has died at his home in Milan. He was 91.

According a report by the Associated Press (AP), the Armani Group confirmed his peaceful passing on Thursday, stating he was surrounded by loved ones. His death marks the end of an extraordinary career that saw him redefine modern fashion and become a symbol of Milan's style dominance.

Born in Piacenza, Italy, on July 11, 1934, Armani launched his own label in 1975 with his partner, Sergio Galeotti. He quickly gained fame for his soft, unstructured jackets and relaxed tailoring, a style that became known as "power dressing." His work famously dressed actor Richard Gere in the 1980 film "American Gigolo", which cemented his status as a go-to designer for Hollywood's elite.

Over five decades, Armani's influence expanded far beyond the runway. His brand grew to include accessories, fragrances, home furnishings, and hotels. Known as "Re Giorgio," or "King Giorgio," he remained fiercely independent, refusing offers to sell to larger luxury conglomerates and maintaining full control of his company until his death.

Tributes from across the fashion industry and beyond poured in following the news. The Armani Group announced that a public funeral chamber will be open in Milan on September 6 and 7, followed by a private funeral, in accordance with the designer's wishes. His death comes just as the brand was preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary during Milan Fashion Week.
