PERTH, Australia—The Australian budget airlines Jetstar Airways has launched its first direct flight from Perth to Manila on November 28, as part of its expanded international operations. The new route is expected to boost tourism between the countries.

Jetstar CEO, Stephanie Tully, said this marks a new chapter for the company, and the Philippines’ capital will be a popular destination for “its great value shopping, tasty food scene and rich history and cultural experiences”.

In the cockpit of the inaugural flight JQ81 on the Airbus A321LR was Captain Anton Petkovich and First Officer Daniel McKelvie, who is Filipino-Australian.

In a statement, Perth-based McKelvie said, “My mum grew up in Manila and I go back every year to see family and friends so it’s incredible to have direct flights from Perth.” He added that one of his favourite things about the Philippines is “the warm and friendly hospitality of Filipinos who always make me feel right at home”.

According to the Philippines’ Department of Tourism data as of November 2025, Australia ranked fourth in visitor arrivals to the country.

Jetstar flies three times a week to and from Manila. This is its fifth Asian route along with Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket and Bali (Denpasar).
