Eala crushes Zarazua to secure historic Wimbledon 2nd round debut
LONDON, England — Alexandra Eala has made history on the lawns of the All England Club, securing a dominant straight-sets victory over Mexico's Renata Zarazúa, 6-1, 6-2, in her Wimbledon main draw debut.
With this masterclass performance, the 21-year-old secures her very first appearance in the second round of Wimbledon's ladies' singles main draw, marking a monumental milestone for Philippine tennis.
Entering the tournament as the 29th seed, Eala wasted no time asserting her dominance in the first round. In the opening set, her aggressive play repeatedly pressured the Mexican veteran, breaking Zarazúa's service to claim a swift 6-1 advantage. Eala won an impressive 83% of her first-serve points during the match, denying her opponent any opportunity to mount a comeback.

The momentum continued seamlessly into the second set. While Zarazúa maintained a high first-serve percentage of 79%, she struggled to convert her service games against Eala’s unrelenting returns. Eala managed to put together a maximum streak of 7 consecutive points and 7 consecutive games won across the match. She did not face a single breakpoint on her own serve, winning 64 total points compared to Zarazúa's 41, and closed out the final set 6-2 without recording a single double fault.
This victory marks the first time in Eala’s professional career that she has advanced past the opening round of the Wimbledon main draw. Following her strong grass-court preparations earlier this season, her precise execution under the Grand Slam spotlight demonstrates her growing comfort on the surface.

Having safely negotiated her opening hurdle, Eala advances directly to the second round, where she will face Australia’s Maya Joint. Joint booked her place in the second round after defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in three sets, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.
The second-round fixture is scheduled for Thursday, 2 July 2026, with the official court assignment to be finalised by tournament organisers.
The upcoming second-round clash serves as a rematch of the 2025 Eastbourne International final on 28 June 2025, where Maya Joint narrowly defeated Alexandra Eala in a tight three-set battle, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6. This highly anticipated Wimbledon encounter gives Eala a prime opportunity to even the head-to-head record on grass courts.
