MANILA, Philippines—Alex Eala did not disappoint as she made her sensational debut after defeating Russia's Alina Charaeva, the World No. 142, 6-1, 6-2, at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Centre on Monday, 26 January 2026.
The victory sees Eala progress to the second round of the WTA 125 Philippine Women's Open. Her commanding start to the tournament delighted a large home crowd of fans and supporters.
"Gusto ko lang magpasalamat sa inyong lahat na nandito kayo (I just want to thank all of you who are here)," Eala told the crowd following her win. "Mahirap ibahagi 'yung nararamdaman ko ngayon, kasi matagal ko na 'tong pinapangarap. Maraming salamat. (I have no words to express how I feel now because this has been a long-time dream of mine. Thank you very much)."
Eala dominated the opening set in just 24 minutes, utilising sharp down-the-line forehands to break Charaeva twice. Although Charaeva pressured Eala’s serve late in the set, the Filipina fired off back-to-back winners to clinically secure the lead.
The second set presented a challenge as Charaeva took a 2-0 lead and Eala required a medical timeout for a thigh injury. However, showing her trademark grit, the home favourite returned to level the score at 2-2. From that point on, Eala regained full control, cruising to victory in 1 hour and 16 minutes to book her place in the next round.
