Eala Rallies Past Zheng in Washington Debut, Sets Up Clash With Fernandez

WASHINGTON — Alex Eala launched her Mubadala Citi DC Open campaign in impressive fashion, recovering from a set down to defeat Chinese wildcard Zheng Qinwen, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the opening round on Tuesday (US time).
The 21-year-old Filipina showed grit after dropping the opening set, stringing together seven consecutive games across the second and third sets to complete the comeback over Zheng, a former World No. 4. The victory marked a notable turnaround for Eala, who had previously lost to Zheng in the semifinals of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Off the court, the outcome caught the attention of some online commentators and fans who framed the victory through a geopolitical lens—characterising Eala's triumph over her Chinese opponent as a symbolic athletic victory for the Philippines against China amid ongoing regional territorial tensions. On court, however, the contest remained strictly a matter of professional tennis grit and athletic execution.
'What It's Like to Be Filipino'
During her on-court interview immediately following the match, the court announcer asked Eala what it felt like to experience such massive popularity and support across the globe, including in Washington. Eala redirected the focus to her heritage and her fans.
"I think the question should be rephrased — it's what it's like to be Filipino," Eala told the crowd to loud applause before turning to the stands. "Thank you, fellow Filipinos."
Reflecting further on her growth and performance, Eala noted the work behind her recent tour form. "I think it's definitely a mindset that you have," she added. "With the progress I've had this past year, I have a bit more ammunition to back it up."
The victory sets up an all-Southeast Asian heritage blockbuster in the second round tonight (US time), as Eala (World No. 28) advances to face seventh seed Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian-Filipina, who won the Washington title last year, secured her spot in the last 16 with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over Poland's Magda Linette.
