For Filipina visual artist Anabel Pangalangan, art was not merely an aesthetic endeavor during her years abroad in Rome, Italy—it was her lifeline, her voice, and ultimately her vehicle for healing.
Having spent years as an overseas worker and artist in the historic Italian capital developing her artistic practice in portrait drawing and visual expression, Pangalangan has officially returned home to the Philippines. She brings with her a powerful artistic advocacy titled "Kuwento ng Lapis" (The Story of the Pencil). In her own words, the project serves as her ultimate weapon to speak when words fall short, demonstrating how hope can be drawn even from life's darkest lines.
The Birth of an Advocacy
The origin of Kuwento ng Lapis stems from a deeply personal journey. Pangalangan shares that during moments of heavy emotional stress, she found it nearly impossible to articulate her struggles through spoken words. Turning instead to paper and canvas, she discovered that visual art allowed her to communicate what remained unsaid.
What began as a personal coping mechanism quickly evolved into a broader community mission. The Luzon Art Tour Journey
Upon her return from Italy, Pangalangan embarked on an ambitious initiative known as the Luzon Art Tour. This multi-city exhibition series aims to bring accessible, emotionally resonant art directly to regional communities, cultural hubs, and therapeutic environments across the island.
The tour commenced at the prestigious Diwa ng Tarlac, before traveling to the cool hills of the Baguio Country Club. Demonstrating her commitment to bringing art into spaces of healing, the exhibit was subsequently hosted at the Tarlac Medical Center, where patients, healthcare workers, and visitors engaged directly with her therapeutic works through July 28.
The exhibition route continued in Angeles City from August 1 to 8, before making its way to Cabanatuan, Vigan, Laguna, a return leg in Tarlac, and a major national showcase in Metro Manila. Following this domestic circuit, Pangalangan plans to bring the advocacy to an international stage, sharing stories of Filipino resilience with audiences worldwide.
