From Silence to Spotlight: How Jeremy Luke Found His Voice in Belgium

BRUSSELS, Belgium — When 29-year-old Jeremy Luke arrived in Belgium three years ago, he carried with him a simple, quiet ambition: to finish his master’s degree in film.

Originally from Davao City in the Philippines, Jeremy had already earned a Film degree from the University of the Philippines, one of the country’s top universities.

His path seemed steady, even predictable—study and build a career behind the camera.

What began as a modest academic pursuit would soon take an unexpected turn, leading Jeremy to a stage far removed from lecture halls and editing suites.

Beneath blinding lights and in front of millions of viewers, he found himself auditioning for a televised singing competition—The Voice Van Vlaanderen.

For someone who had spent most of his life avoiding attention, it was a moment that seemed almost impossible.

Jeremy describes himself growing up as shy, someone who preferred the safety of routine and the quiet comfort of staying unseen. While his creative ambitions drew him to film, his personal life was shaped by a different kind of narrative—one marked by fear, hesitation, and silence.

“I am almost 30, and I’ve realized that I’ve lived most of my life in fear and shame as a queer person—and I don’t want to do that anymore,” he said.
