BRUSSELS, Belgium — When 29-year-old Jeremy Luke arrived in Belgium three years ago, he carried with him a simple, quiet ambition: to finish his master’s degree in film.
Originally from Davao City in the Philippines, Jeremy had already earned a Film degree from the University of the Philippines, one of the country’s top universities.
His path seemed steady, even predictable—study and build a career behind the camera.
But life, as it often does, had other plans.
What began as a modest academic pursuit would soon take an unexpected turn, leading Jeremy to a stage far removed from lecture halls and editing suites.
Beneath blinding lights and in front of millions of viewers, he found himself auditioning for a televised singing competition—The Voice Van Vlaanderen.
For someone who had spent most of his life avoiding attention, it was a moment that seemed almost impossible.
Jeremy describes himself growing up as shy, someone who preferred the safety of routine and the quiet comfort of staying unseen. While his creative ambitions drew him to film, his personal life was shaped by a different kind of narrative—one marked by fear, hesitation, and silence.
“I am almost 30, and I’ve realized that I’ve lived most of my life in fear and shame as a queer person—and I don’t want to do that anymore,” he said.
That realization became a turning point.
In a place far from home, Jeremy began to confront parts of himself he had long kept hidden.
Belgium, with its distance and newness, offered both anonymity and possibility—a space where reinvention felt within reach.
What started as a personal reckoning gradually transformed into an act of courage.
Stepping onto the The Voice Van Vlaanderen stage was more than just an audition. It was a declaration.
As the first notes left his lips, the room fell into a hush. Then, one by one, the judges turned their chairs. Four turns.
In the language of the show, it’s the clearest sign of approval—a unanimous recognition of talent.
Coach Mathieu Terryn, said “You’re a total package”.
“You’re a star”., added Coach Laura Tesoro
But for Jeremy, the moment carried a deeper meaning. It wasn’t just about vocal ability. It was about being seen, fully and without apology, perhaps for the first time in his life.
The applause that followed was loud, immediate, and affirming. Yet beyond the spectacle of television, Jeremy’s journey resonates in quieter, more profound ways. It is a story about migration and self-discovery, about the intersections of art and identity, and about the courage it takes to rewrite one’s own narrative.
Today, Jeremy Luke stands at a crossroads he never anticipated. What began as a plan to study film has evolved into something far more expansive—a journey toward visibility, authenticity, and voice.
And in stepping into the spotlight, he has done more than perform.
He has finally allowed himself to be heard.
