WINDSOR — History was made on Wednesday,13 May 2026, at Windsor Castle, as Edison “Ed” David was formally granted the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his transformative services to education, his work in improving outcomes for children, and his support of educational leadership across England.

The medal was awarded by His Royal Highness Prince William, the Prince of Wales, on behalf of his father, His Majesty the King.

“First and foremost, I dedicate this to my mom. She is the reason why I am here. I dedicate this to my three children and, of course, to all the Filipinos out there who are striving really hard for themselves, for their family, and for the community,” he told ABS-CBN News after the investiture.

The ceremony marks a significant milestone; David is the first person of Filipino heritage to receive an MBE specifically for educational leadership, underscoring the profound impact of Filipino professionals within the United Kingdom’s public sector.

David received the honor in the presence of his three children. Honoring his Filipino heritage, he wore a bespoke Barong coat from Lumban, Laguna—known as the “Embroidery Capital of the Philippines”—bringing Filipino pride and identity to the historic occasion.

“Wearing a Barong from Lumban was especially important to me because I wanted to proudly represent Filipino heritage during such a significant occasion. I hope this moment inspires Filipinos around the world and highlights the important contributions our community continues to make internationally.”

Originally from Tarlac, David has built a respected career in the UK education sector through school improvement initiatives, mentoring, leadership, and inspection work. He shared the "small talk" he had with the Prince of Wales:

“We had a chat about the education programme that I do here and also the education programme that we will be launching in the Philippines.”

David is set to collaborate with the Philippine Department of Education on a bespoke phonics programme aimed at improving literacy and early reading among Filipino learners. The initiative follows discussions with Education Secretary Sonny Angara and education partners in the Philippines, in response to concerns raised in the EDCOM 2 report on reading proficiency.

From Tarlac Classrooms to British Leadership

A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), David’s career began in the trenches of the Philippine public school system. After relocating to the UK, he climbed the ranks to become one of London’s most respected school leaders.

He currently holds a high-profile dual role:

  • Executive Headteacher: Managing two schools in the London Borough of Lambeth, both rated "Outstanding" by regulators.

  • Ofsted Lead Inspector: Serving as a senior evaluator for the UK’s national education inspection body.

The MBE recognizes David’s extensive contributions to national policy and social mobility. Throughout his career, he has focused on:

  • Turning Around Schools: Leading underperforming institutions to academic excellence.

  • Government Advisory: Shaping national reforms through the Department for Education’s Headteacher Reference Group.

  • Supporting the Disadvantaged: Focusing on research-informed teaching to close the achievement gap for underprivileged students.

A Tribute to Filipino Educators

Standing at Windsor Castle alongside his three children and giving an interview, David remained humble, dedicating the prestigious medal to his family and his mother. He framed the honor as a victory for the entire Filipino diaspora.

"This award is not just for me. It's also for everyone who supported me along the way," David stated.

The honor was originally announced in The Gazette on December 30, 2025. The ceremony at Windsor Castle—one of the official residences of the British Monarch—finalizes David’s transition from a local educator in Tarlac to a pillar of the British establishment.

The MBE is among the United Kingdom’s highest honors, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to education, public service, and community leadership.
