“I have received many insults and threats from members of my own community who are ignorant of what is happening. To be honest, I was deeply hurt by some of the comments, but carrying the Philippines flag for the first time in the history of a demonstration in Italy sparked a chain of discussions that I considered “necessary”, not to spread hatred or create chaos but to inform people of our community about the sad reality we live in,” he said.

“I have also heard beautiful words from people of my generation, from those my age who do not have children, from those who already have families and from those who are still in school.

We know for certain that we belong to different generations, yet the same blood flows through our veins, but we have and will always have different ideologies, having grown up in different contexts, circumstances and countries.”

“But the problem is that nobody takes an interest in European politics, which has been in disarray in recent years. This concerns OFWs (overseas Filipino workers), the children of OFWs and the generations that follow since we all live here and many of our children are going to be Italian citizens as well. This is about the future, not the past. I speak on behalf of my generation and those to come.”

“Living here I personally experienced every point I just listed. We live in a world where the elites feast while the people starve, where wars destroy families and innocent children pay the price. The Philippines flag, why? I am afraid that I will not be able to provide my future family with a dignified future in Italy, given all the circumstances listed above.

It pains me to think that I might have to leave home after all the sacrifices my parents made, leaving the Philippines to raise me in Italy.

Having experienced this, like many of my peers born and raised here, children of immigrants, I would feel as though I were disrespecting their sacrifices by leaving for potentially better countries, leaving behind family, friends and homeland, repeating the story of my parents.”
