Keir Starmer Resigns as British Prime Minister After Internal Labour Party Revolt

LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, 22 June 2026, bowing to overwhelming pressure from within his own governing Labour Party. The announcement, made outside 10 Downing Street, follows a turbulent period capped by devastating local election losses and the Westminster return of rival Andy Burnham.

Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in July 2024, will remain in office as a caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen by the party. The timeline for the leadership race will see nominations open on 9 July, with a plan to have a replacement in office by September at the latest.

Standing before journalists at the famous black door of Number 10, an emotional Starmer acknowledged that he no longer held the confidence of his parliamentary colleagues.

"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election," Starmer said. "I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace. Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour party."

During the address, Starmer defended his record and the dramatic transformation of the party since he took the helm following the 2019 general election.

"Six years ago, I inherited a Labour party that was politically, financially and morally bankrupt," he noted. "We proved those people wrong because we changed our party, ripping out the poison of antisemitism, restoring trust on the economy, defence and national security, and becoming a party that once again stood proudly with, not against, our national flag."

He also highlighted the legislative and diplomatic achievements of his two-year premiership, pointing to restored international relationships.

"And look at what we've achieved in just two years... Our reputation in the world restored, with Britain once again standing up for decency, respect and the rule of law, securing trade deals, standing with Ukraine, standing up for our values and rebuilding our relationship with our allies in Europe."

Starmer appeared close to tears as he concluded his speech by pivoting away from public service to his family, thanking his wife, Victoria, and his teenage children.

"And when I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and my joy," he concluded.

The Prime Minister confirmed he had already spoken to His Majesty King Charles III to formally communicate his decision. The race to replace him is expected to center on Andy Burnham, the newly sworn-in MP for Makerfield, though other cabinet figures may still emerge to challenge the former Greater Manchester mayor.
