MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. marked Ninoy Aquino Day on Friday, calling on Filipinos to draw inspiration from the late senator’s legacy to safeguard freedom and foster a progressive nation.

In an official message, the Chief Executive noted that the day serves as a reminder of the courage needed to uphold personal convictions and actively participate in the country's democratic process. He added that the commemoration reaffirms a collective responsibility to live with honour and dignity.

“Ninoy Aquino Day, therefore, invites us to acknowledge the past and draw from it the resolve needed to safeguard freedom, strengthen our institutions, and deepen national unity,” the President said.

The late senator, a prominent opposition figure during the administration of the President’s father and namesake, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., was assassinated on 21 August 1983 at the Manila International Airport upon returning from exile in the United States. His death sparked widespread public outrage, serving as a catalyst for the 1986 People Power Revolution that brought an end to the dictatorship.

Addressing contemporary issues, the President highlighted modern threats to democracy, including disinformation, institutional distrust, and civic indifference. He emphasized that such hurdles underscore the necessity of active civic participation.

“Ninoy’s legacy encourages us to meet these challenges with vigilance and faith in the Filipino people as we work together to deliver meaningful progress for all,” he stated.

Furthermore, the President pledged that his administration remains dedicated to defending national sovereignty and providing equal opportunities across all sectors of society.

“Together, let us carry forward the lessons of our history as we continue to nurture a more peaceful and prosperous Bagong Pilipinas,” he concluded.
