COPENHAGEN, Denmark—The Philippine Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark, which oversees Greenland, is currently maintaining a state of vigilance as of January 2026, in response to geopolitical tensions within the region.

The Philippine government handles consular services for Greenland via its mission in Copenhagen, as there is no physical Philippine embassy located in Greenland.

In response to recent international events and the threat of a potential foreign takeover of Greenland, the Embassy has formally advised the estimated 1,110 members of the Filipino community through the issuance of Philippine Embassy in Copenhagen as an official advisory through their website and social media page.

Filipinos are advised by the Embassy to remain calm and vigilant, although they state there is presently "no cause for alarm."

The mission is actively coordinating with Greenlandic and Danish authorities to ensure the safety of Filipino nationals and Dual citizens.

”They are safe and are continuing with their usual daily activities. The Embassy remains in constant and close coordination with the Filipinos in Greenland through community leaders and other networks to stay informed of their situation,” stated by the Embassy via email.

A priority has been placed on updating the directory of Filipinos in Greenland. The Embassy has launched an online registration form to ensure they can reach every citizen promptly in the event of an escalation.

Contingency Plans for Filipinos in Geographically Isolated Areas

The Philippine Embassy in Copenhagen was requested by TFCN correspondent to provide a contingency plan for Filipino citizens residing in Greenland. This request stems from the fact that Filipinos in the area remain vigilant and on high alert due to the potential for the situation to escalate. This heightened readiness persists even though U.S. President Donald Trump retracted his threats to seize Greenland from Denmark, according to statements he made last Wednesday, January 21st, in Davos, Switzerland.

“First, they would be advised to shelter in place. When weather conditions allow, they would be extracted by air or by sea, in coordination with relevant authorities (including the Greenland emergency personnel led by the Greenland Police together with Air Greenland SAR, among others) so that they could be relocated to staging areas and safe zones in larger towns (such as Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq), which have larger airports and infrastructure for onward evacuation. “ The PE in Copenhagen confirmed this via email.

On Safety and Participation in Public Demonstrations

In the wake of the nationwide demonstration led by Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on January 17 in Nuuk, Greenland, the Philippine Embassy has issued a statement concerning the involvement of Filipino nationals in the protest.

“The Embassy does not actively encourage or discourage participation in public assemblies. Filipino citizens who choose to take part in demonstrations may do so in their personal capacity and are advised to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and comply with instructions from local authorities. The same guidance applies to Filipinos who are dual citizens.” PE Copenhagen has stated via email.

“Participation in rallies or demonstrations have legal and safety considerations depending on the nature of the event and prevailing local regulations. The Embassy advises all Filipino nationals to remain peaceful in the exercise of various freedoms and avoid situations that may escalate.” PE Copenhagen further stated.
