ADAMUZ, Spain—The Philippine Embassy in Madrid has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the aftermath of a catastrophic high-speed train collision that occurred in the province of Córdoba on Sunday evening, 18 January 2026.

According to the latest reports, the tragedy has claimed at least 39 lives and left 152 injured, including 24 in serious condition and five individuals currently in critical care.

The Philippine Embassy, in coordination with the Office of the Undersecretary for Migration Affairs has taken immediate steps to verify if any Filipinos were among the casualties.

"We have been in contact with the relevant train operators," said Dyan Kristine Miranda-Pastrana, First Secretary and Consul for Cultural Affairs, Tourism and Public Diplomacy in Madrid to TFCN's querry about the incident.

Pastrana added, "Renfe has informed us that no Filipino nationals are listed among the victims, while ADIF has indicated that it has no information suggesting that our nationals were affected but cannot confirm this."

Although initial reports from Spanish rail authorities suggested no Filipinos were involved, the Philippine Embassy is urging the community to help verify these findings.

Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Mark Francis Hamoy explained the complexity of the identification process:

"Although we earlier received information from Renfe, Iryo, and Adif that there were no Filipinos involved in the accident, we are unable to discount the facts that they only check the DNI/NIE, which does not indicate the nationality of the subject. So please check with your respective networks if anyone you know was on board either of those trains. Family members and next of kin may coordinate with us to help verify and validate information on their loved ones who may have been on the train.”

Embassy teams have conducted on-site visits to the offices of the train operators and continue to maintain direct communication via phone and email. The Philippine Embassy in Madrid remain on high alert to provide consular and welfare assistance if any Filipino involvement is discovered.

Details of the Collision

The accident involved a private Iryo high-speed train travelling from Málaga to Madrid and a Renfe train en route from Madrid to Huelva. The collision occurred on a straight section of recently renewed track near Adamuz.

Authorities noted that the most severe impact was felt by passengers in the first two carriages of the Alvia train, which tumbled down a four-metre embankment. Renfe officials explained that the 20-second window between the initial derailment and the subsequent impact was insufficient to activate emergency braking systems.

King Felipe VI has expressed his profound "consternation and concern," offering his sympathies to the families affected by the disaster. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived at the crash site by helicopter earlier today to oversee the emergency response and is expected to issue a formal statement shortly.

To assist with the difficult process of victim identification, the Guardia Civil has established offices in Córdoba and Huelva to collect DNA samples from relatives.

Emergency Contact Information

For those seeking information regarding passengers, the train operators have activated the following hotlines:

Renfe: 900 101 020

Iryo: 900 001 402

The Philippine Embassy advises the Filipino community to monitor local media for further updates.
