LONDON — As tennis enthusiasts from across the globe descended upon the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for Wimbledon 2026, a wave of passionate Filipino fans flocked to southwest London to rally behind tennis sensation Alex Eala.
Among them was London-based pastry chef Felix Bayker, Jr., whose journey to watch Eala’s opening-round match on Tuesday, June 30, turned into an unexpectedly seamless and VIP-like experience.
While thousands of eager fans spent the break of dawn braving the notorious, hours-long Wimbledon queue, Baker took a vastly different route. Arriving at the grounds at 11:30 AM with the intention of securing a standard ground pass, Baker and his companion were inside the historic tournament gates by 2:30 PM, ready to catch the action.
Baker credited Wimbledon's world-class accessibility services for the smooth entry. Speaking with TFCN, he shared how his standard procedure turned into a special accommodation.
"I went through the proper queuing and got my Queue Card. But since I have a London Pass and a Disabled Freedom Pass, I stayed at the Accessibility waiting area. We waited for our turn and received golf car assistance and everything," Baker explained.
The real surprise came when they reached the ticket booth. A standard ground pass for the day was priced at £33 GBP. However, upon presenting his credential, the perks multiplied. "We went to the ticketing area, showed my London Freedom Pass (Disabled Pass ID), and got a free ticket for me—though not for my companion," Baker added.
A Historic Grass-Court Campaign for Eala
Baker’s swift entry allowed him to witness a masterclass performance on Court 12, where the 21-year-old Eala put on a clinic against Mexico's Renata Zarazúa. The 29th-seeded Filipina cruised to a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory in just one hour and 17 minutes, marking her first-ever career main-draw win at SW19.
Eala’s spectacular opening win set off a historic chain reaction in the tournament:
-Second Round: Eala battled past Australia's Maya Joint in a thrilling three-set comeback, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Thursday, July 2.
-Third Round: In front of a stunned Centre Court crowd on Saturday, July 4, Eala pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament by dethroning the reigning Wimbledon champion and world No. 3, Iga Świątek, in straight sets, 7-6(9), 6-2.
What's Next?
With her monumental victory over Świątek, Eala has become the first tennis player from the Philippines to ever reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament.
Filipino fans worldwide, including local supporters like Baker, will be glued to the screens on Monday, July 6, as Eala heads into the Round of 16 for a highly anticipated blockbuster match against the No. 13 seed and 2024 Wimbledon runner-up, Jasmine Paolini.
