LONDON, England —The London summer break kicked off for me in the third week of July, bringing with them the familiar annual conundrum for working parents: how to keep children entertained for weeks on end. Having raised a now 13-year-old daughter, I am no stranger to scouting out the city's top summer activities, whether planning for just the two of us or accommodating a group of her friends.

When an invitation arrived via the Foreign Press Association to preview the newly-openedPaddington Bear Experience, my daughter gamely agreed to come along. As avid fans of thePaddingtonfilm franchise, we were both eager to see how the beloved cinematic world translated into real life.

Arriving at London’s iconic County Hall (accessible via the main entrance near the SEA LIFE London Aquarium), we were greeted by a substantial line. However, the queues were well-managed and moved swiftly.

An Interactive Journey to Windsor Gardens

The one-hour walkthrough takes visitors on a multi-sensory journey from Paddington Station straight to the Brown family home at Windsor Gardens. The experience relies heavily on energetic live actors, interactive games, and continuous story-driven tasks. Along the way, guests encounter members of the Brown family who enlist the audience's help to prepare Aunt Lucy’s special marmalade recipe, culminating in a lively Marmalade Day street party.

What sets this attraction apart is its hands-on nature—you are actively participating, from helping out in the kitchen to interacting with the performers. Film enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the staging, which incorporates physical elements from the original movie sets, creating a genuine sense of stepping through the screen.

The Verdict

While the sweet spot for the interactive gameplay is arguably children under 10, the production value makes it genuinely entertaining for all ages. That said, prior familiarity with the films is key; the narrative relies on your appreciation of Paddington’s journey from Darkest Peru to London. My 13-year-old and I both found it a thoroughly charming, wholesome afternoon out.

ThePaddington Bear Experienceruns seven days a week at London County Hall through September 5. If you are looking to round out the summer holidays with a delightful family activity, it is well worth adding to your London itinerary.
