22-Year-Old Charged In Fatal Shooting Of Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk At Utah Campus
OREM, Utah–A 22-year-old Utah man has been arrested and charged in the assassination of conservative activist and media personality Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at an event on a college campus last Wednesday.
Tyler Robinson was taken into custody on Thursday night, less than two days after Kirk was killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in Orem. Authorities believe Robinson, a third-year student at Dixie Technical College, acted alone. He is being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice charges.
The shooting occurred around 12:20 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Kirk, the co-founder and CEO of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was speaking at a debate as part of his "American Comeback Tour" when a single gunshot was fired from the roof of the university's Losee Center, approximately 142 yards away. Witnesses and video footage show Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while answering a question about mass shootings. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The assassination, which has been widely condemned by politicians from both sides of the aisle, has reignited the national conversation about political violence in the United States. In a press conference, Utah Governor Spencer Cox made an impassioned plea for de-escalation, urging people to bridge differences through dialogue rather than violence.
According to an affidavit, a family member told investigators that Robinson had become “more political in recent years” and had expressed a dislike for Kirk's viewpoints. A high-powered, bolt-action rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered in a wooded area near the campus. According to authorities, ammunition found at the scene was engraved with anti-fascist and other politically charged messaging.
Kirk's widow, Erika, delivered her first public remarks since the shooting, vowing to continue her late husband's work. In a statement, she said, "You have no idea the fire that you have ignited within this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry."
Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, was an influential figure in the conservative movement, particularly among young people. His death has prompted tributes from a wide range of public figures, including President Trump, who ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in Kirk's honor.
