ROME, Italy—Plans for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel to assist in protecting American delegations at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy have ignited a significant political row.

The Homeland Security Investigations division of ICE is set to provide support to the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service during the Games, which run from 06 to 22 February 2026. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) clarified on X that all security operations remain under Italian authority, the announcement has met with fierce domestic pushback in Italy.

Italian politicians have expressed sharp criticism regarding the presence of these agents, citing a tarnished international image of the United States following recent controversies. ICE and Border Patrol agents have recently faced intense scrutiny over their enforcement tactics under President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, particularly following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota earlier this month.

To address the backlash, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin emphasised that ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement on foreign soil. Instead, their specific remit for the Milano Cortina Games includes:

  • Vetting and mitigating risks posed by transnational criminal organisations.

  • Collaborating on international partnerships to combat human trafficking.

  • Preventing drug trafficking in coordination with local authorities.

Former ICE Chief of Staff Jason Houser noted that such deployments are not unprecedented. The agency has historically maintained a presence at major international sporting events, including previous Olympic Games, to bolster security infrastructure.

Despite these assurances of a standard partnership, the timing of the deployment amidst heightened tensions over American law enforcement practices has turned a routine security measure into a heated diplomatic talking point.
