LONDON, England — Sherlock Holmes fans’ long wait is over as the legendary detective returns to screens in a bold new reimagining. Guy Ritchie’s latest crime drama, Young Sherlock, premieres March 4 on Prime Video, promising an explosive and stylish take on the iconic character’s early years.

The eight-part series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a teenage Sherlock Holmes, transporting viewers to 1870s Oxford and beyond. Described as an “irreverent, action-laden mystery,” the show explores the formative experiences that shape the world’s most famous consulting detective — long before he becomes Baker Street’s most renowned resident.

Tiffin’s film credits include The Woman King, First Love, The Loneliest Boy in the World, The Silencing and the After film franchise. Stepping into the shoes of such an iconic literary figure, the actor brings a youthful intensity and defiance to a Holmes who is brilliant, raw and unfiltered.

Irish actor Dónal Finn stars as James Moriarty, the enigmatic figure destined to become Holmes’ greatest adversary. Finn is also currently starring as Orpheus in the West End production of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Hadestown, showcasing his range across stage and screen.

Young Sherlock is based on the Young Sherlock Holmes novels by Andrew Lane, which chronicle Holmes’ teenage years and earliest investigations. The adaptation focuses on the young detective’s first major case — a globe-trotting conspiracy that threatens his freedom and alters the course of his life forever.

The series will “expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.” Viewers meet a disgraced and unpolished Holmes who finds himself wrapped up in a murder investigation that tests both his intellect and his resolve. When a charismatic, youthfully defiant Sherlock crosses paths with Moriarty, he is dragged into a case that escalates far beyond Oxford, leading to an explosive showdown.

Unfolding in a vibrant Victorian England and adventuring abroad, the series promises sweeping locations, high-stakes action and the sharp wit audiences expect from a Holmes story — but with a fresh, youthful edge.

This journalist also spoke with screenwriter Matthew Parkhill about ensuring Young Sherlock stands apart from previous film and television adaptations of the beloved detective. Parkhill discussed crafting a character who feels contemporary while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original stories, as well as collaborating closely with Ritchie to shape the tone of the series.

Ritchie directs the first two episodes and serves as executive producer. The series is created for television and executive produced by Parkhill, alongside

executive producers Dhana Rivera Gilbert, Marc Resteghini, Simon Maxwell, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Kelton and Colin Wilson, with co-executive producersHarriet Creelman and Steve Thompson.

Speaking to reporters, Ritchie reflected on adapting such a well-known character and working with an amazing cast, bringing kinetic energy and a distinctive visual style to the origin story.
