Thailand School Shooting: 8 Filipino Teachers Safe as Death Toll Rises

A 14-year-old killed five teachers and wounded over 30 at a school in Bang Kruai, Thailand. He shot his grandparents at home beforehand, then turned the gun on himself.

BANGKOK — Eight Filipino teachers were among those caught in a deadly shooting at a school outside Bangkok on Friday, but all were accounted for and unharmed, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand said as authorities investigated a rampage that left several people dead and more than 30 injured.

The teachers, all registered with the embassy as working at Debsirin School Nonthaburi in Bang Kruai district, were confirmed safe after the 14-year-old suspect opened fire inside the school, according to the embassy.

The Philippine Embassy stated it was continuing to monitor developments and remained ready to provide assistance to Filipinos affected by the incident.

What happened?

The violence began before the teenager arrived at school.

According to Thai authorities as quoted Reuters, the 14-year-old first shot and killed his grandparents at their home using his grandfather's handgun.

He then traveled to Debsirin Nonthaburi School carrying the weapon and ammunition.

At school, he opened fire during the morning, killing teachers and injuring students and other people. The attack ended when the teenager shot himself on the school's fourth floor; he later died in a hospital, Reuters reported.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the suspect appeared to have been under stress connected with school and that the attack appeared to have been planned.

Authorities were also examining his background and possible access to the firearm.

Death toll and injuries

Initial reports varied as authorities worked to establish the full toll.

The latest reports cited by the Philippine Embassy and Philippine government media put the death toll at seven, while more than 30 people were injured, including about nine who were critically hurt.

The fatalities included five school staff members, the suspect's grandparents and the teenage attacker, according to the latest accounts.

The differing numbers in early reports reflect the rapidly changing situation as police and hospitals accounted for victims.

Why the Filipino teachers' safety matters

For the Philippine community, the immediate concern was whether Filipino nationals had been caught in the attack.

The embassy said all eight Filipino teachers at the school were "safe, accounted for, and uninjured."

The embassy expressed condolences to the victims' families and the wider school community and said it was prepared to provide assistance if needed.

The incident also highlights the sizeable role Filipino educators play in Thailand's international and private-school sector. Filipino teachers have long worked in Thai schools, universities and language programs, making their safety a recurring concern during emergencies.

Thailand confronts another gun-violence shock

The shooting is likely to renew questions about firearms access in Thailand.

Reuters described Friday's attack as the country's deadliest mass shooting since 2022, when a former police officer killed 36 people, most of them children, at a child-care center in northeastern Thailand.

Thailand has comparatively high civilian firearm ownership for Southeast Asia, and the country has repeatedly confronted debates over gun regulation following high-profile shootings.

The fact that Friday's suspect was only 14 — and allegedly obtained a firearm belonging to his grandfather — adds another dimension to that debate.

The investigation

Police are investigating how the teenager obtained the handgun, his movements before the shooting and whether anyone else helped plan or facilitate the attack.

Authorities have said the teenager appeared to have planned the assault and had been experiencing academic stress. Reuters also reported that investigators were examining indications of his interest in firearms and shooting-related games.

Those details remain part of the investigation and should not be treated as a definitive explanation for the attack.
